5 Things to Check Before You Buy Vintage Clothes While Thrifting

Thrifting is part treasure hunt, part patience game. Whether you are hitting a local Goodwill, an estate sale, or browsing our shop, a few quick checks will save you from bringing home duds — and help you spot the gems everyone else walks past.

1. Check the seams and stitching

Flip the garment inside out. Tight, even stitching and finished seams usually mean better construction (and often, older, higher-quality manufacturing). Loose threads and glued hems are red flags.

2. Read the tag — it tells a story

Union labels, single-stitch hems, and “Made in USA” tags can date a piece to a specific era. Learning a few tag tells is the fastest way to spot true vintage from a modern reproduction.

3. Hold it up to the light

Thin spots, moth holes, and stains hide until you backlight the fabric. A two-second light check beats discovering a hole at home.

4. Smell test (yes, really)

Musty odors and mildew can be tough to remove. A faint thrift smell washes out; deep mildew usually does not. Trust your nose.

5. Know the brands worth grabbing

Certain labels hold value whether you wear them or resell them. Build a mental list of brands you trust, and grab them when the price is right.
